Featuring interviews with artists like Jadakiss, Mos Def and Busta Rhymes, industry moguls like Russell Simmons, and a host of fans of all genders, persuasions and perspectives, Hurt asks some incendiary questions and in the process blows the lid off the whole issue. Some, like Fat Joe, toe the line of apology and rationalization; some, like Busta Rhymes, simply leave when the questions are too pointed, calling to mind his appearance on The Boondocks in “The Story of Gangstalicious”. Most insightful are the thoughts of the many hungry freestylers who Hurt is constantly recording and interviewing, emphasizing the common lyrical thread of violence and misogyny – in one MC’s words, “They don’t want to hear us speak righteously!”.

The film approaches each question separately, with full treatments of scenarios like Nelly’s attempted Bone Marrow Drive at Spelman College, thwarted because of the images of women in his video “Tip Drill”; and rap video footage accompanied by statistics of gun violence and sexual assault in America. The issue of white consumption of a Black cultural product is poignantly depicted by the young white Hip Hop head in his dad’s truck who exclaims that gangsta rap is “my music!”. Jadakiss, who’s earlier dismissal of violence in rap is somewhat disturbing, actually frames the whole scenario best when he explains how “any sales over 700,000 is in the white market”, and that the old money suits that really control the industry and sign the cheques are all “scratch white”.

Mistah Chuck D. himself provides the skeleton by commenting throughout on what Hip Hop has become and what it could be, if we were to actualize our full potential as creative beings. As the representative of Golden Era Hip Hop who stays true to it’s original values, Chuck exemplifies the artist as a man of his community, who speaks for his people with love and respect.

Thoroughly educational and entertaining, “Beyond Beats and Rhymes” contains so many gems of wisdom that it merits multiple viewings, and should stimulate a long needed discussion in the Hip Hop community at large. This type of effort, from a truly concerned Head, is the kind of forward thinking and daring project that could herald a new vision of what Hip Hop represents, one that actually believes in maturity and respect from a movement that is past pushing thirty.

NOTES........:

This DVD is nearly 5 hours and covers a lot more than's
listed above, some of this overlaps with stuff featured
on different similar DVDs, ("The Truth DVD" and "EXPOSED:
Tupac Breaking The Oath" for example), but it's still
worth checking out. I don't agree with or endorse all of
it, do your own research, pick out the good info from the
bad etc.

The Life of Rayful Edmond -The Rise and Fall Vol 1

Rayful Edmond III, (born 1965), was a notorious drug dealer who is largely credited with introducing crack cocaine into Washington, D.C. At his peak, Edmond was alleged to have sold over 2,000 kilos of cocaine a week, worth tens of millions of dollars, in the Washington, D.C. area. Edmond controlled as much as 70% of the D.C. drug trade in the late 1980s. He was known to have spent some $457,619 in an exclusive Georgetown store (Linea Pitti, specializing in expensive Italian men's clothing) owned by Charles Wynn (later convicted on 34 counts of money laundering for the Edmond drug gang). Edmond was arrested in 1989 at the age of 24. His arrest and subsequent trial were widely covered by local and national media. Judicial officials, fearful of reprisals from members of Edmond's gang, imposed unprecedented security during the trial. Jurors identities were kept secret before, during, and after trial, and their seating area was enclosed in bullet proof glass. Edmond was jailed at the maximum security facility at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia and flown to the Federal Court House in Washington, D.C. by helicopter each day for his trial.

Authorities took this unusual step due to fears that an armed escape attempt was almost inevitable due to the violent nature of Edmond's gang. This gang was believed to have committed over 40 murders including the attempted murder of a local pastor, the Reverend Mr. Bynum, who was shot 12 times during an anti-drug march in his Orleans place neigborhood. Edmond was eventually sentenced to life in prison. His mother (Constance "Bootsie" Perry) along with several of his sisters and cousins were sentenced to 14 years in prison for participating in his criminal enterprise. Years after his conviction, Edmond became a government informant in order to secure his mother's release from prison. While he is still incarcerated, Edmond is now part of the witness protection program and his location is unknown.

Beat This!: A Hip Hop History

This was a BBC production that was later put out on Video in the UK sometime around 1986 on video label called channel 5. The UK only had 4 TV channels at that time. If you are a fan of the era and the scene then this is definitely a worthwhile acquisition if you can find it (You can view it on the videos section of this site or youtube). Like style wars and wildstyle you will recognise that this has been cained as sample fodder and you will appreciate the opportunity to see a number of legends back in the day.

If you are not a particular fan of the genre then you will probably find your toes curling at those same legends, wondering whatever possessed them to dress up in some of the truly ludicrous attire that they wear here. Bam + Force posing as outer space galactic beings in fancy dress, flying down from planet Rok to put the Bronx in Future Shok! Grandmaster Caz and the rest of the Cold Crush indulging their Overtly swelled sexist alter ego's 'the heartbreakers' whilst wearing the campest attire. The Dynamic Rockers having the gayest Breakdance battle with themselves. These and many more moments are truly laughable! Yet fans of the genre probably would'nt bat an eyelid knowing that this was all part of an evolution that at that time, was still in its infancy. (I think some of the current practitioners of Rap still have'nt Grown up yet, but thats a whole different argument).

Between some of these contrived set pieces are some good interviews. Kool Herc gets his for being the catalyst to it all. Brim really holds it down on the Graffiti argument. This prompted the production to later tour him around the U.K. in their 1987 "Bombin'" documentary. Talk about standing him under the conservative media's cross hairs at such a young age. The way he held up is just a testament to that guys character. Malcolm Mclaren gives a good account of the first outsiders discovery of hip hop and gets mocked as the first outsider to exploit it. There is a host of small cameo's, Curtis Blow, Arther Baker, Lisa Lee, jazzy jay etc etc. Whilst it was done during that era before Rap called its own and kicked everyone else to the curb, it still isn't that comprehensive over all the elements. The spotlight only gets to a select few. However just for the fact that it's all set in the irreplaceable aesthetic of early '80s NY is enough for fans of the genre to appreciate this.
